The bid was strongly supported by Gordon Hogg, Production Electrical Superintendent at the Boulby. He was in the coastguard for more than twelve years and has also trained in first aid at the Boulby mine, so he has plenty of experience of what needs to be done when things go wrong: “I started following the Foundation on Facebook and wanted to get involved,” he said.

“Unique” Marathon Completed 3000 Feet under North Yorkshire…

Two Army Cadet National Ambassadors, Sally Orange and Jordan Wylie, alongside a small team of runners from ICL UK, ran a marathon at the bottom of the deepest mine in the country.

Running 26 miles in any circumstances is a challenge but doing so a thousand meters under the surface of the earth in temperatures which can reach 40 Celsius – while dressed in safety equipment – is not for the faint-hearted.

In addition, due to Covid-19,  those participating had to observe social distancing, wear face coverings and sanitize regularly. Masks were removed briefly for photo opportunities.

NHS: Clapping Down Below

As people across the U.K continue to ‘clap for the NHS’ every Thursday evening, among them is a group of employees far underground.

They work at ICL Boulby in East Cleveland at minus 1,400 metres, the second deepest mine in Europe and the world’s only multi-nutrient mineral polyhalite mine, stretching out to 9km under the sea. Every Thursday, staff working underground and on the surface, show their support for all those at the front line in tackling the COVID-19 virus.

The mine has been recognized as an essential business, contributing to the need to maintain food supplies, and has maintained production throughout the current crisis.

“In an industry which works constantly to manage safety issues, we feel particularly aware of the challenges facing those working in the health and care services and want to show our appreciation and support.”

Andrew Fulton, ICL Boulby’s General Manager and Vice President
