Community Engagement in Europe

Turkey

On October 30, 2020, the western province of Izmir, Turkey was hit by a severe earthquake. At least 25 people were killed and hundreds were reported injured. To this date, there are hundreds of people who have been left homeless due to the natural disaster.

Following this tragic event, the original volunteering activity for ICL Amfert employees in Bandirma, Turkey, during ESG week changed in an effort to support people in need. The entire ICL team concentrated its energies on providing immediate support, packing and sending food and clothing packages to Izmir’s citizens.

COVID-19 community response- - activities by the ICL Amsterdam HQ

During the COVID-19 crisis  in the first half of 2020, ICL’s European headquarters initiated several initiatives to support the community:

  • Donating shirts to a hospital in Amsterdam (AMC) which were used as extra cover under protective clothing worn by the physicians and nurses in the hospital.
  • Every year ICL employees in Amsterdam traditionally receive chocolate eggs for Easter. This year, due to the lockdown, it was difficult to maintain this tradition. As a result, the chocolate eggs were donated to the Amsterdam Foodbank. Thousands of families in Amsterdam are dependent on the Foodbank and these families have no money to purchase items such as chocolate eggs during Easter. Hopefully, many of these families celebrated Easter with a smile.

In coordination with MT, ICL also donated chocolate Easter eggs to an elderly home, “de Schutse”.
