EHS Performance Data

ICL holds the health and safety of its employees in the highest regard and aims for top-tier safety performance. It invests extensively in safety training and in enhancing a strong safety culture to prevent accidents and ensure the health and safety of its employees, contractors, and visitors to its sites, as well as that of the Company’s product supply chain.  \

ICL complies with strict occupational safety and health standards and has implemented a new Safety & Environment management system that provides the framework and structure to drive excellence.

ICL has adopted occupational health and safety management systems beyond regulatory requirements at 93% of its production sites. These EHS management systems are either ISO 45001/ISO14001 certified or equivalent management systems. The certified sites include approximately 98% of the Company’s production sites workforce, and 85% of its total global workforce (based on data used in indicator 102-8). Sites that do not have industrial production processes, such as office buildings, do not have safety management systems beyond what is required by law. That includes approximately 14% of ICL’s employees.

Major EHS Events

Despite ICL's continued efforts to reduce work accidents at its sites, in June 2020 (June 4 and June 25) two fatal events occurred involving contractor workers at ICL Iberpotash’s Vilafruns mine in Spain.

In response to these events, mining activities at the site were halted. These events are currently under investigation. A deep internal learning process was undertaken, and following this process work plans were updated.

ICL Iberia (Iberpotash) is taking further corrective actions to improve conditions, implementing a proactive approach and measures, including enhanced safety training of relevant personnel, preparing emergency reaction measures for safe production, and enhanced hazard recognition and prevention practices.

Each year reactive and proactive EHS KPIs are identified according to different business units and KPIs are tracked by each of them and established as personal goals for site managers and EHS managers.

Safety Reactive KPI’s Performance (lagging indicators)

Total Accidents#1197780

During 2020, company employees total working hours were approximately 20.3 million.

Calculations of both IR and SI rates are conducted based on a 200,000 factor (multiplied by total company employee lost workday cases and absent days, respectively). Total accidents increased by 4% in 2020 compared to 2019. The number for Company employees has remained constant, and the number of accidents among contractor employees has increased by 11%.

Total Accidents

The Company set an annual target of reducing IR global rate by 10% compared to the previous year. This year the IR global rate was reduced by 2% for Company employees and by 5% for contractor employees.

Rate of work accidents (IR Rate)

However, the severity rate (SI) for Company employees significantly decreased, resulting in a 14% decrease in the SI rate. The SI (Severity Index) general methodology is based on an assumption that the number of absence days is correlated with the severity of the safety event.

ICL’s proactive safety KPIs

ICL is implementing a global system that will include EHS Management and Risk Assessment processes. The EHS Management system defines ICL Policy and Guidelines and creates a common language across the Company.

Part of the ICL Global EHS Management System is the establishment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for EHS. ICL’s focus is on proactive leading indicators that prevent EHS related events from occurring. EHS processes are audited annually by external auditors to ensure they are effective. External Audits and EHS KPIs are covering company employees and contractors.

The Global ICL Proactive KPIs for 2020 are:

  • Implementation of an EHS Management system.
  • EHS and Compliance Plan Audits: completing 100% of planned external and internal audits.
  • Event investigations completed on-time: completing >90% of investigations for high and medium severity safety incidents within the internally defined designated 40 days post-incident.
  • Corrective Action Reports on-time: implementing required actions from CAR created following high and medium severity safety accidents and following safety audits. >90% of these actions should be completed in the defined time frame (and 100% of actions will generally be implemented).
  • Hazard Recognition Index – proactive site-based internal reporting regarding unsafe conditions found on site and their mitigation.
  • Performance of 1-2 Risk assessment processes such as HAZOP, JSA

EHS strategy and performance is managed by VP of Global EHS, who leads the Global EHS committee.

Progress related to EHS development and mitigation activities is reported monthly to the COO and the CEO of the company. In addition, this progress is reported semi-annually to the GEC and annually to the Board of Directors.

The new management system enables ICL to control and monitor EHS activity in different levels of the organization with a global perspective.
